“Take a break, go pee, maybe get something to drink!” Scarlet yelled when no one moved. And then everyone was moving at once.

I didn’t have to pee, nor was I thirty, so I just sat back in my chair and let it all wash over me. I turned to Mabel, the moon elf bouncing in her chair and humming under her breath.

“Mabel,” I said, turning to her. “There is something that has been... perplexing me about this place. Well, not just one thing. The whole place is beyond everything I’ve ever known and dreamed of. But the prompts, ugh…” I paused, struggling to put my question into words. So, instead, I showed her. “Magical Cultivation.”

True to the world, the word popped up between us, glowing for a moment in the bright auditorium.

“That,” I said, pointing at the word before it faded. “Why does that happen?”

“I can see why that would be confusing,” Mabel said, the word reflecting in her large eyes. “I hear that is why people from the mundane worlds are rarely recruited. Well, that, and the fact that once they are indoctrinated to our magical system, the results can be very unpredictable. My people have dwelt in magical worlds for millennia.”

“What do you mean by unpredictable?” Chloe asked, leaning across me to join in.

Mabel shrugged. “I don’t know. It is just what they say. But personally…” she said, pausing to watch the group of blood elves as they reappeared in the auditorium. “I have heard stories about the towers, and that they changed the nature of not just mana, but the worlds they are connected to. I am not old enough to know what it was like before them, so this is just guessing on my part. The prompts, as you call them, are the tower. It doesn’t create mana but regulates and controls it. Before them, I believe cultivation was much more unpredictable, or raw. Some, born with more sensitivity to mana, could probably acquire a great deal of strength and power quickly. Others struggled to gain an understanding of the basic principles. Those people that have been living in worlds controlled by the towers for so long. You two have not. Anyways, it is just what I think. In most cultures, it is not considered acceptable to discuss it openly.”

“Okay, let’s get back to your seats and be quiet,” Scarlet said, her voice booming over them.

Could that be the answer to Chloe’s doubts? I wondered. Are races like the blood elves afraid of our cultivation potential, because we aren’t a known commodity?

“I know we’ve gone over a lot so far. We will not have time to go through it again so, if you have questions, ask your teachers during class. We are moving on.”

She turned back to the glowing hologram, and it changed again. The different disciplines appeared, each dropping into a particular fighting stance. I perked up. Now, this was the thing I was interested in most. Maybe it would help me decide my specialty.

“The disciplines.
